During the week of October 16, we had many parents and community members drop by school to discuss their careers with our second grade students. We heard about so many awesome careers! A huge "thank you" goes out to all our visitors!
For Tasty Tuesday this month, we made Cheesy Spider Webs. These healthy treats were sure fun to make (except for the tricky spider!).
Room on the broom stem activity
On Friday, October 20, we put our brains to the test with a STEM challenge from the book Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson. In this story, a clumsy witch drops items while flying on her broomstick. As she dips down to get them, she finds animal friends who climb onto her broom. Our challenge was based on the concept of balance and putting all the characters onto the "broom." Each group was given a ruler, a sharpened pencil, a can of Playdoh, 20 pennies, and cups with the characters on it. Using these items, their job was to balance the characters on the "broom" however they saw fit. The kids came up with some very creative balances! We had to discuss how balances freely swing on a fulcrum based on weight. Designs were planned, attempted, modified, destroyed, and repeated during the 40 minute time frame. The conversations that took place during this activity were awesome. Teamwork was key to this activity.
